Add to My Stash

This afternoon I drove over to my mother’s house. My mother mentioned she had some old patterns and fabric of mine mixed in with hers, and I was welcome to take it home.

I had a delightful time going through my mother’s stash of patterns and fabric — so lovely and inspiring. I did find about 10 different kinds of fabric and a few patterns that I bought many, many years ago that I’ve brought home to mix in my current stash.

And it was fun, too, to see my mother’s vision, and what she enjoys. We have similar taste, and it was neat to hear her plans for different fabrics.

The years do change perspective. I have always liked plaid, but I REALLY liked it a lot in my 20s. And corduroy. And royal blue. I still like royal blue, but I’m not as willing to wear the color in a skirt or pants.

I am pleased to see I’m consistent in my choices of natural fibers — cotton and silk all the way!

This is almost like free fabric, so no guilt in trying out patterns to make lightweight pajamas and robes for the family. All the fabrics are home to roost — I have to keep plugging at organizing the sewing corner. All in good time!

Sounds like fun! Great to get the material…good your mom saved it and the patterns!

I meant to ask…have you ever done pysanky yourself?

    • I’ve done pysanky, taught my son, and I host a social with the moms in our local homeschool group. This will be my 3rd year for the social — it’s a relaxing and enjoyable evening!

Wow! you have done pysanky and even taught your son! that is super! The social sounds good! Is it just the adults who do it or do the children do it too? Are the designs people do simple – I am wondering what sort of results you get. Last question: is it done in the evening or could it be done in the afternoon? I am thinking maybe I could do one in my parish here…last, last question – do you do it during Lent or right before EAster or after Easter? Thanks!

      • I have taught small groups of children, but they do need to be small. The social I host is in the evening, when moms can get away, and it just adults (and I only have room for about 15 or so. I do it in early Lent, so they can practice and prepare for Easter. The Ukrainian Church in DC does it the week before Palm Sunday (that’s where I learned). That’s on a larger scale. http://ucns-holyfamily.org/orgs/pworkshop/ I use some simple designs; there is loads of info on the internet, and I’d be happy to send you a few links.

I would love it if you could send a couple of websites for the pysanky and that is very interesting about the Shrine in DC!

  2. Will you share a pic of the organized sewing corner when you have one? Maria and I need help!

  3. I think my sewing machine was one of my first Christmas gifts as a married gal over ten years ago. It just totally went kaput on me last month … hmm maybe time to ask for a new one; I do have a birthday in March.

    I hope you’ll show us those pj’s and robes : D

    • May your machine rest in peace. It’s overwhelming to choose a new machine. I was trying to avoid made in China, so that eliminates a lot. And making the choice between mechanical and electronic is the next choice.

As soon as I get the last two patterns, I’ll share the pics. Problem with vintage patterns is there is limited choices.
